Today we will go through the process of how to create a masterpiece design, beginning with the word selection and then brainstorming ideas based upon the word chosen. After we create our list of brainstormed words, I will show you how you can use them to come up with ideas for fill patterns, characters, and/or background patterns and settings. You should choose the lettering style (bubble letter, wild style, or other) based on the word that you selected and your 3d effect will be determined by the lettering style (rounded forms such as bubble letters get drop shadow and angled forms such as wild style get 3D).

Before getting too involved and deep into your practice drawings, today we will stop to review the project packet for your next project. Included in the packet is a description of the project, the process you will use to create the art, project requirements, a checklist to help you keep track of your work, and the rubric explaining how you will be graded. We will also look at examples of artwork for this project to help you come up with ideas.
Don’t worry about your intial practice drawings. If you have something that you really like going on, I’ll show you how it can be redrawn for the new project.

Today we will continue working on our graffiti drawings by completing the 3D effect and fill patterns as well as creating a background for our bubble letter graffiti drawing and for your wild style drawing. Patterns, characters, and objects that add to the meaning of the word that you chose to draw are a good way to create backgrounds for your pieces.

Today we will take our fourth open notebook quiz. Because it is open note, you MUST remain quite at all times (before, during, and after). Talking constitutes cheating. So please observe the quiz rules so that you do not get any points taken off, or get a zero for non-compliance.
- Remain quiet at all times (before, during, and after) UNTIL all students have finished.
- If you have ANY questions, SILENTLY raise your hand and patiently WAIT for Ms. Lemish to come over to you.
- You will receive your quiz face down. DO NOT TURN IT OVER until Ms. Lemish has told you that you can (she will wait for everyone to be quiet first).
- When you are finished, turn your quiz over and Ms. Lemish will come over to collect it.
When you are finished with your quiz, REMAIN SILENT. When everyone is finished we will continue working on our 3D and fill patterns for our wild style letters.
CANDY WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE WHO BEHAVE!

Today we will learn how to create 3-Dimensional effects for wild-style lettering. This is the hardest of all 3-d effects to learn and requires patience and practice. In reality what you are really doing is drawing the outlines for the letters offset at a 45 degree angle and then connecting the corners to create the 3d effect.

Today we will learn how to create wild style letters. There are as many individual styles and ways to make wild style letters as there are individuals. What they all share however are sharp jagged edges and arrows. We will go through the process using a method that can be adapted to all letter-forms:
Lettering Process:
- Start with drawing the “bones” of the letters (this is for placement, spacing, and spelling).
- Add rounded rectangle caps and/or arrow caps to the ends of letters and sharpen the corners .
- Add the “flesh” around your “bones” to connect the caps and corners.
- Erase your original bones and shape up your letter forms.

Today we will learn how to add 3-demonsional effects to bubble letters that also show the location of the light source for a drawing. We will add reflection lines and flairs to make the letters look shiny and we will add a drop shadow on the opposite side of the letter forms (shadow is always furthest away from the light source and reflection lines always are placed closest to the light source).
When adding 3D effects and Light Source effects it is important to remember. DO NOT PLACE THESE EFFECTS ALL THE WAY AROUND THE LETTERFORM! They only go around 2 sides of the letters at most. Also, add flairs sparingly (2-3 at most) to your drawing.

Today we will go over vocabulary terms important to this next unit on graffiti art and also how to create bubble letters. There are as many individual styles and ways to make bubble letters as there are individuals. What they all share however are the rounded, bubble-like puffy letters. We will go through the process using a method that can be adapted to all letter-forms:
Lettering Process:
- Start with drawing the “bones” of the letters (this is for placement, spacing, and spelling).
- Add rounded caps to the ends of letters and round the corners .
- Add the puffy “flesh” around your “bones” to connect the rounded caps and corners.
- Erase your original bones and shape up your letter forms.

Today we will start our next unit on graphic design by learning about “modern rock art” in the form of grafitti art. To do this we will watch a documentary on the origins of grafitti art in New York City. Be sure to listen carefully as you will be asked to write answers to questions in response to the film. Enjoy!

Today we will mat our artwork by backing it with black construction paper and then write display text to go with it. Pay attention to the demonstration by Ms. Lemish so that your artwork is matted properly and looks as professional as possible.Matting Process:
- Place a sheet of newsprint behing the drawing face down on the table.
- Draw the glue in a concentric square around the drawing, then with hands at opposite corners diagonally across, pick up your drawing by the corners and turn it over to center it over the black construction paper.
- Lay it down onto the black paper from the center out to the edges, if it is NOT centered you can quickly move it into place.
- Place newsprint on top ofo your drawing and carefully press the drawing onto the construction paper without smearing the charcoal and chalk drawing.
- WRITE YOUR FULL NAME IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER WITH WHITE PENCIL.
- When you are done, give your matted drawing to Ms. Lemish so that it can be pressed flat.
When you are done with matting your artwork, get the display text worksheet and write about drawing and what you have learned about cave painting and rock art following the prompts and directions on the worksheet.
