UPDATE — 8 MAY 08

May 8th, 2008 by rposey

Greetings.

New units are beginning in each class.  In the regular English classes (both 2 and 4), we will be working on a magazine article and creative nonfiction unit.  In Poetry, we will finish with the Romantic poets and move on to a unit on Poetry of Protest, with a sub-unit in which I hope some Latin will be learned.  Also, period 7’s English 2 class will have a special team-building project.

CLASSWORK 2 MAY 08

May 5th, 2008 by rposey

Today in class we need to get the TRAILS and library usage surveys done.

First, go to and fill out this survey.  http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey-intro.zgi?p=WEB227MQR4G2SX  It’s about library usage, and the results will be automatically sent to a variety of people, so please take it seriously.

When you finish the survey (it should only take you a few minutes, probably not more than 5) we will start the TRAILS online survey.  Again, please take it seriously.  This is an important part of the process of getting the grant for the new library, which will be a good place for all of you next year.

To get to TRAILS, go here:

DURING THE BREAK

April 22nd, 2008 by rposey

I hope you are having a nice break from school.  Meanwhile, don’t forget that you have the College Application pieces due the Monday you get back.  NO LATE WORK.  What you should turn in is:  1) the application itself, 2) the short answer, and 3) the essay.  If you have lost your application, you can email me and I will send you one, or you can Google “common application” and it should take you to a college site with the right information.

The research project will get underway shortly after we return.  The research project grade will count toward the LAST marking period, but this application package counts toward THIS marking period.

!!!!MIDTERM REMINDER!!!!

31MARCH08

March 31st, 2008 by rposey

At the risk of being a little premature, I wanted to go ahead and give you fresh information about what’s coming up next in each class.

POETRY

Next, you will start learning about the Romantic poets.  These were poets who were, well, Romantic.  Some of their work had to do with what you will consider traditional Romantic topics, such as love, relationships, etc.  Mostly, however, they wrote about Self and Nature and Identity.  This should be an interesting unit.

ENG 2 & ENG 4

Both English classes will start working on two things in April.  First, a college research unit, and second, interpreting nonfiction.  I suspect that English 4’s workload will be similar in content to English 2’s, but with more rigorous assessments.  Also, I may introduce an element of journalism into English 4 more than in English 2.

PARENT CONFERENCES

Looking forward to them.  ‘Nuff said.

TESTS NEXT WEEK: MONDAY 24 MARCH 08

March 18th, 2008 by rposey

Don’t forget — Tests next week for everyone!

ENG 2 — Test on Siddhartha, Monday the 24th of March (pages 1-73)

ENG 4 — Test on Secret Life of Bees, Monday the 24th of March (through chapter 4 — I think it ends on page 83)

POETRY — Test on basic poetic terms and analysis, Monday the 24th of March

Wednesday, 12MARCH08: New Information

March 12th, 2008 by rposey

Hey all.

I am now posting various assignment sheets that you may find helpful. For my Eng 2 class — don’t worry too much about the Siddhartha sheet — that was mostly created in order to give you useful work during my Jury Duty adventure, and will now serve largely as assistance for tests and so on. But please feel free to do that work if you think it will help you understand the book better, or participate in class better. For Eng 4 — I will put together another sheet like that for Secret Life of Bees so you can use it as a study sheet, etc.

Well, having come back after my adventure at the Opera, I am all ready to turn music into poetry, and vice versa.

In other news, I have added a link to the Nuyorican Poetry people, with specific intent for the Poetry class to consider some kind of work with that organization.
